Nestled In The Woods

Driving through the backroads into the country of the blue ridge mountains, the little farming communities gives you important insight into a world not often seen. Hidden behind the highways and byways, rural America’s roots are deep, strong in the blue ridge mountains. On some rainy days, when the heat of the day is washed out by a cool shower, you come upon magnificent scenes such as this. Close enough to touch, far enough away you dare not trespass, rural American farmlands in the mountains are a sight, but the barns that stand as testament to them are truly a gem.

This is of course, my own personal barn. Built seventy-three years ago alongside my little cottage home. I actually have plans to slowly, painstakingly tear this structure down board by board and rebuild a new barn in its place. But the sight of it surrounded by the leaves of trees, pressed into the hill with the diffused lighting got me excited enough to stop what I was doing, and snap a photo.

The edit here was long, complicated, but I don’t regret the effort. First I had to adjust the keystones on this particular structure. Straightening it out, preventing a distortion in the bottom. It can be painstaking, but I believe I got it just about right. Then we needed to bring the barn out of the shadows, and deepen the foliage, hide the modern world around it. The powerlines, the wires hanging off the side of the barn. There was quite a bit of cloning here, finally we began to see the image take shape. It’s a painstaking process, but one I greatly enjoy.
